111 Depot St, Roxboro, NC 27573

Colored Pencil Class
Instructor: Kate Lagaly

Join Kate at the brewery for an Art and Ale class!  Learn how to make beautiful
drawings using colored pencil.  Kate will show students 2 different approaches
and 2 different surfaces/papers.  This session the focus will be using a solvent
and using watercolor pencils as an under drawing.  Kate will demonstrate
techniques step by step with work time for you to try the techniques on your
own.  This class is for beginners up to intermediate level students.

Supply List

Colored Pencils - I use prismacolor.  Other artist quality brands will work if you already
have them.

The set of 48 Prismacolor colored pencils online are usually the least expensive at Cheap
Joe’s, Dick Blick, Walmart, or Amazon (links below).

Cheap Joe's

Dick Blick

Walmart

Amazon

Optional - If you decide to order pencils online I suggest also ordering an extra White pencil
or two and a Pomegranate, Scarlet Lake, Black Grape, Yellow Chartreuse, and Copenhagen
Blue from Open Stock (the Yellow Chartreuse and Copenhagen Blue are in the set of 72).
You might also want a Colorless Blender.  I do not use the colorless blender much, but some
of my students love it.  I can show you what it does.

Watercolor pencils - Get a small inexpensive set of watercolor pencils from a local art
supply store or online or at Walmart.  We will use these as an under drawing/painting.

Solvent - Rubbing Alcohol and a cheap paint brush and/or some Q-tips.  There are many
other solvents used with colored pencils, but this is the easiest to get and least expensive.

Sharpener - Another thing you might want to get is a battery powered pencil sharpener
with a stainless steel helical blade.  It makes life easier.

I use a battery sharpener like this for classes -

Helical blade -
OR you can use a small hand held blade sharpener -

Lifting and erasing - I also use pencil top erasers and stik tak/adhesive putty/poster
putty/mounting putty for erasing, lifting and shading.  Also bring a small roll of scotch tape
and masking tape for lifting.

Surfaces - I will sell the papers we use to you at my cost.  I do this because many of the
papers are in pads of 25 sheets or cut up from a large sheet of 32" x 40".  It makes it less
expensive for you. The cost will be determined at a later date, but is usually under $3.50 all
together.

Transfer paper - Drawings are transferred using white transfer and graphite paper.  You
can get individual sheets of graphite and white. I will have some sheets for shared student
use in class.
