Mixed Media Class, March, 2020
Instructor: Kate Lagaly

Join Kate at the brewery for an Art and Ale class!  Kate will show students
several approaches to mixed media.  Students will learn various methods
to make textured backgrounds with watercolor and how to use ink and colored
pencil over the top.  Students will learn to use values, to layer, color mix, and
blend the mediums. Kate will demonstrate techniques step by step with work

Supply List

Colored Pencils - I use Prismacolor.  Other artist quality brands will work if you already
have them.  The set of 72 or 48 Prismacolor colored pencils are usually the least expensive
online at Cheap Joe’s, Dick Blick, Jerry's Artarama, Walmart, or Amazon. Look for sales.
Optional - If you decide to order pencils online I suggest also ordering an extra White Pencil
and a Pomegranate, Scarlet Lake, and Black Grape from Open Stock.

Watercolor Pencils (optional) - bring a small set of watercolor pencils if you already
have them.

Watercolor - Bring what you have.  If you do not have watercolor you can get Cotman
Watercolor tubes a red, yellow, and blue.

Watercolor brushes - Bring what you have.  I use Loew Cornell Ultra Round brushes
size 2, 6 or 8, 14

Watercolor Palette - You can purchase a watercolor palette from Walmart or art stores.
I have and use a variety. For class I bring a travel palette, Walmart has an inexpensive one.
A butcher tray will work as a palette, some people use plates.

Ink, black and white - A black ink pen.  I usually use drawing pens such as Acurit
Waterproof Technical Pens or Sakura Pigma Micron (size 03 is good).  Bring what you have.
A white gel pen.  I usually us Sakura White Gelly Roll Pen (size Medium/08), Sakura Gelly
Roll Classic Gel Pen White (size 1.0mm), or Uni-Ball Signo Broad Point Gel Pen White
(size 1.0mm).  Bring what you have.

Surfaces/Papers - Watercolor Paper, professional or student grade watercolor paper will
work for this class. We will use two 9 x 12 pieces of watercolor paper, cold press (on the
smooth side) or hot press watercolor paper, 140 lb or 300 lb will work.

Sharpener (optional) - Another thing you might want to get is a battery powered pencil
sharpener with a stainless steel helical blade.  It makes life easier, but is optional.
I use a battery sharpener like this for classes -

Or

Helical blade -
OR you can use a small hand held blade sharpener

Lifting, erasing, blending - I also use pencil top erasers and stik tak/adhesive
putty/poster putty/mounting putty for erasing, lifting and shading.  I use a drawing stump
for blending.

Transfer paper, Tape, Pencil - Depending on the surface, drawings are transferred
using white transfer or graphite paper.  You can get individual sheets of graphite and white.
I will have some sheets for shared student use in class.  Bring some tape and a pencil as well.

Miscellaneous supplies - An old hand towel, paper towels, water container, tape, a
pencil, scissors

There is no need to spend a fortune on new supplies.
A minimal supply list would be - 2 pieces of student grade watercolor
paper size 9 x 12; A plate or tray from home for the palette; 1 watercolor
round brushes size 10 or 12; Cotman watercolor tubes - a red, yellow, and
blue; Prismacolor colored pencils set of 12, 24, or 48 (compare prices and
